Cultural Buildings Monoprinted

Grade 4 have been researching buildings from different places around the world as part of their inquiry into who we are. They have been focusing on drawing, printmaking and painting. During this lesson they focused on filling in background layer neatly and blending colours. On a side note, some colour vocab buzzing in the art room this week: ceruleum, cobalt and emerald! Great to hear them using accurate terminology.

Grade 4 Elements of Line and Shape

The students were given ‘line families’ and ‘shape families’. The activity was to mark down as many lines and shapes on the page in five minutes. The students concentrated really well and it was a great warm up for the following monoprinting project. Becoming familiar with lines and shapes will help them recognise and draw these when they observe their subject… the foundations of drawing.

Grade 3 Complementary Colours

The students were challenged to apply their knowledge of colour theory by selecting colours for the background that complemented the colour of their fruit and veg prints. They found out which was the complementary colour by looking at the colour wheel and finding the opposite colour on the wheel. They also discussed a cut-out painting by Matisse using important art vocabulary! They did a great job!

The Grade 4 students created prints using fruit, vegetables and complementary colours. They were asked to consider the principle of ‘balance’ while creating their composition. They’ll continue to work colours into the background using oil pastels, creating a bright dynamic piece of art. Looking forward to seeing these finished once they return from Outward Bound!

Grade 4 Record Sleeve Designs

The Grade 4 students have completed their record sleeve designs! This project took them through so many learning experiences, the guest visit from Sev and Alex helped them to investigate how people used to listen to records on record players. they got to handle records and listen to vinyl. One player was from the 1950’s and one from the 1980’s! Their record sleeve designs turned out amazingly, see for yourself by walking through the stairway gallery as you enter the school!

Grade 4 Music Incursion

The Grade 4 students had a chance to interact with old music equipment thanks to our visitors Sev and Alex. Sev and Alex, also known as Tree-Angles brought in two old record players, one from 1950’s and one from 1980’s. They also brought in lots of vinyl for listening to but also for appreciating the artwork on these records. The students enjoyed ‘scratching’ the sound by pushing the record back and forward under the needle. They also did drawings in response to sounds.
